1. The Goal

Mahjong solitaire is a one-player matching game played with mahjong tiles stacked in a shape. Tap two matching tiles to remove them. Clear every tile from the board to finish the level.

There is no opponent and no countdown clock. You can stop, pause and come back whenever you like; your board is saved on your device.

2. Which Tiles Are Free

You can only pick up a tile that is free. A tile is free when:

  • Nothing is on top of it. No tile on a higher layer covers any part of it.
  • Its left side or its right side is open. A tile squeezed between neighbours on both sides is stuck until one of them is cleared.

Tap a stuck tile and it gives a little shake. Blocked tiles can also be shown a shade darker, so the free ones stand out (turn this on or off in the menu).

3. The Tiles

Each tile has a match somewhere on the board. Matching tiles show the same face. The game uses:

  • Pictures, such as a star, moon or sun.
  • Winds: north, south, east and west.
  • Circles, bamboo and numbers, from one to nine.

Early levels start with pictures only, which are the easiest to tell apart, then add winds, numbers and circles as you go.

4. Hint, Shuffle & Undo

All three helpers are free and unlimited. Use them as often as you like.

  • Hint makes a matching pair glow.
  • Shuffle mixes the remaining tiles into a new layout that can still be cleared.
  • Undo takes back your last match.

Every board can be won

Each level is dealt so that it can be cleared. If you get stuck with no matches left, the game offers a shuffle.

5. Levels, Score & Stars

  • Levels start small, with about two dozen tiles, and grow to large shapes like the Mountain. There is no last level.
  • Score: each match earns points, with a small bonus for quick matches in a row.
  • Stars: finish a level and earn one to three stars, depending on how quickly you cleared it. No clock is shown while you play, and time only counts while the board is on screen.

Replay any time

The same level always deals the same board, so you can replay it to earn more stars.

6. Made Easy to See

This mahjong was made for anyone who finds small tiles hard on the eyes.

  • Extra-large tiles with bold, simple faces.
  • Big buttons that are easy to tap on a phone or tablet.
  • No timer pressure.
  • Add it to your Home Screen from the menu, and it opens like an app.

7. Tips

  • Work on the tall stacks first. Tiles on top hide the most tiles below them.
  • Open up long rows from the ends. Clearing an end tile frees the next one in.
  • When three or four of a face are free, choose carefully. Pick the pair that uncovers the most new tiles.
  • Stuck? Tap Hint. There is no penalty for using it.

8. Questions

Is this mahjong free?

Yes. It plays free in your web browser, with no download and no sign-up. Hints, shuffles and undos are free too.

Is there a large-print or big-tile version?

This is it. The whole game is built around extra-large tiles and big buttons, so it is easy to see on a phone, tablet or computer.

Is there a time limit?

No. There is no countdown and no clock on screen. Finishing faster only earns more stars.

What if I get stuck?

Tap Hint to see a pair, Undo to take back a move, or Shuffle to mix the remaining tiles. Every board can still be cleared.

Is this the same as Mahjong with four players?

No. Mahjong solitaire uses the same kind of tiles, but it is a one-player matching puzzle, not the four-player game.

Will I lose my progress?

Your progress is saved in your browser on that device. On iPhone and iPad, adding the game to your Home Screen keeps it safest.
